Great info and questions, and thanks for the shout out. 😀
I’ve long been intrigued by the real and perceived differences between storytelling in history and storytelling in genealogy, and it is something I’m really excited to be exploring on my Substack.
Wow, this is marvelous, @Helene Ryding! What a wonderful way to weave in Lori Olson White (@hometownwriter) and her Lost and Found Storybox.
It also fits right into a discussion we had yesterday in the "All About That Place" discussion with @Cynthia Boatright Raleigh and @Annette Laing about how history itself. We talked about how we're led to believe that history is all fact based and unchanging through time and yet... it isn't as generations move on and reinterpret facts, recontextualizing them in modern terms for new generations.
I think these are important conversations. You had me at Techne
You did a great job laying out the range of definitions of genealogy. Even “professional genealogists” can’t define the difference between themselves and non-professionals. An attempt was made by APG but the definition implies that non-professionals are un-ethical and lazy which is not true!
Btw that journal Genealogy last I checked is one people pay to publish in, 1,400 Swiss Francs, in case that affects your view of the author.
I’ll be so curious to see what technology advances will do for genealogy especially in terms of DNA tests
